Most paints have a basic range of up to 50 colors, but paint mixing machines can mix literally thousands of different colors and shades. So how do you decide what color to pick when there are so many options? And if you don’t like the color, your neighbors probably won’t like it either – after all they have to live with your choice too. The good news is that with some careful planning, the final plano painting job will be a great result that everybody likes.
The first things to consider when choosing a color scheme are the architecture of the house and how the color will fit in with the neighboring houses, you want to stamp your own style on your house, but not create an eyesore that everybody hates!
An exterior paint scheme is usually made up of at least three colors: the base which cover large areas such as the wall; the trim such as corner boards, window trim, and fascias; and finally accent, to highlight key items such as doors and shutters.
Base colors are going to cover the biggest portion of how the house looks, and will determine your choice of trim and accent. A lighter base color will make your house look larger, whereas a darker color will make it appear smaller. Other parts of the house that you don’t want to highlight like gutters and downspouts can also be painted in base color to help them blend into the background.
The trim color is a key to making the overall look. Painting the trim the same color as the base can give the house a new or even unfinished look. Dark trim, especially around the windows,  can create a picture frame effect for the windows. Alternatively a lighter trim than the base is often a safe bet.
The accent color is what brings out the highlights. It brings life to the color scheme and draws attention to important features of the house. The front door, shutters, and the windows frames are good places for accent colors.
You PP contractor will be a big help in choosing colors, by showing you pre-selected color palettes arranged by architectural style or color range that put together complimentary base, trim, and accent colors.  And together you will end up with a house you’ll be proud to own.
